Slot gambling has recently become a popular topic of conversation. This attention follows an incident involving a member of the Jakarta Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) allegedly playing a slot game during a plenary meeting.

As shown in a viral video, a member of the Jakarta DPRD from the PDIP faction, Cinta Mega, was seen playing a game on her tablet during the meeting.

The incident was captured by journalists, showing Cinta Mega placing her tablet on her desk with the game open. However, she denied playing a slot game, claiming instead that the game on her tablet was Candy Crush.

“It was Candy Crush. I put it on the table, not playing it. I didn’t play it, you can ask my colleagues,” she said.

What is Slot Gambling?

Slot gambling is a form of gambling where players try their luck on slot machines to win prizes.

The basic principle of slot gambling is that players must pull a lever or press a spin button to spin reels containing various symbols.

The goal of slot gambling is to match specific symbols on a designated payline to receive payouts based on the machine’s pay table.

Different symbol combinations offer varying levels of payout. Some slot machines also feature bonus elements or special symbols, like Wilds and Scatters, which can increase the chances of winning larger prizes.

Players needed to match poker combinations to win prizes, which were awarded by bar owners, such as drinks or cigars.

In 1895, Charles Fey, a mechanic from San Francisco, developed the first slot machine with three-symbol reels.

Named the “Liberty Bell,” this machine became the prototype for modern slot machines, featuring symbols like bells, spades, hearts, and diamonds, with the number seven as the highest-value symbol.

Specifically for online gambling activities, Article 27 paragraph 2 in conjunction with Article 45 paragraph 2 of the ITE Law imposes a maximum prison sentence of six years and/or a fine of up to one billion rupiah for those who intentionally distribute or enable access to online gambling.

Despite these clear prohibitions, gambling, particularly online gambling, remains easy to find within society.

Various social media platforms even openly display how these slot games are played.

Moreover, slot gambling ads are also frequently encountered, often promoted by influencers with large followings.

The government, through the Ministry of Communication and Information, must intensify efforts to combat online gambling to protect more Indonesians from becoming victims.
