This process can involve folding the steel up to 16 times, creating thousands of layers that give the blade its unique grain pattern, known as hada.

Shaping the Blade

Once the steel has been folded and welded, the smith begins to shape the blade. This involves hammering and cutting to form the basic outline, followed by the creation of the tang, or nakago, which will be inserted into the sword’s handle.

 The blade is then refined through meticulous hammering to achieve the desired curvature and profile.

Heat Treatment

The next critical step is the heat treatment process, which includes hardening and tempering. The blade is coated with a special clay mixture that helps control the cooling rate during the quenching process. The blade is heated to a high temperature and then rapidly cooled in water, creating a hard, durable edge while maintaining a softer, more flexible spine. This differential hardening process gives the katana its characteristic curved shape and ensures a balance between sharpness and resilience.

Polishing and Sharpening

Polishing is a vital aspect of Japanese sword making, transforming a rough blade into a gleaming masterpiece. This process can take several weeks and involves the use of various grades of whetstones. 

The polisher, or togishi, carefully grinds and hones the blade, bringing out its natural beauty and enhancing its cutting performance. The final polish highlights the hamon, the distinctive temper line that showcases the blade’s differential hardening.
